PM Lee addresses Parliament on Singapore's response to COVID-19, post-pandemic challenges, jobs

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong spoke in Parliament on Wednesday (Sep 2) on Singapore's response to COVID-19 and life beyond the pandemic. The speech was broadcast live on CNA and the Prime Minister's Facebook page. In his speech, Mr Lee spoke about Singapore's fight against COVID-19, the challenges ahead for the city post-pandemic, job concerns amid a battered economy and the Government's approach to the discussion of policies and major issues facing the country.

Singapore's exports grow 6% in July, boosted by surge in gold shipments

Singapore’s non-oil domestic exports (NODX) grew 6 per cent in July from a year ago, beating expectations and bolstered by shipments of non-monetary gold, specialised machinery, pharmaceuticals and electronics. The latest data from Enterprise Singapore on Monday (Aug 17) is a drop from June's revised 13.9 per cent increase, but higher than the 4.3% expansion forecast by economists in a Reuters poll.On a month-on-month seasonally adjusted basis, NODX rose by 1.2 per cent

Japan and Singapore aim to reopen business travel in September

The foreign ministers of Japan and Singapore agreed Thursday to work toward resuming business travel between the two countries in September after a monthslong halt to curb the spread of the coronavirus. Japan's Toshimitsu Motegi and Singaporean counterpart Vivian Balakrishnan reached the accord during a meeting in the city-state. Singapore Finds Virus in Cleared Worker Dorm, 800 Quarantined

About 800 migrant workers have been quarantined after a case of Covid-19 was discovered in a dormitory that had been cleared, Singapore’s Ministry of Health said in a statement. Singapore earlier this week said it was “actively monitoring the dormitories to manage the risk of new outbreaks,” as there had been instances where new cases were discovered at previously-cleared dorms. The discoveries could mark a setback for the country that this week said all its workers’ dorms have been cleared

HSBC announces two Singapore-based senior appointments

HSBC Private Banking on Wednesday said it has appointed Ken Ng as its Singapore market head, and Gary Goh as its market head for Malaysia. The appointments, which are based in Singapore, are effective immediately. Both Mr Ng and Mr Goh will report to Philip Kunz, head of South-east Asia for HSBC Private Banking.
