Malawi cancels independence festivities due to COVID-19

Malawi’s newly elected president has cancelled the country’s 56th Independence Day celebrations slated for Monday due to a surge in coronavirus cases. Lazarus Chakwera also scaled down his inauguration ceremony scheduled for the same day, which was supposed to take place at a giant stadium in the capital, Lilongwe, but will instead be held at the Kamuzu Barracks in the city, where only 100 people will be invited. “We will direct all the resources meant for the Independence Day celebrations

Opposition wins rerun of Malawi's presidential election in historic first

The historic rerun of Malawi’s presidential election has been won by the opposition, the first time a court-overturned vote in Africa has led to the defeat of an incumbent leader. Lazarus Chakwera’s victory was a result of months of determined street protests and a unanimous constitutional court decision that the May 2019 vote had widespread irregularities and could not stand. Chakwera won with 2.6 million votes out of 4.4 million cast.

Malawi: Chakwera to Be Sworn in As New Malawi President - Chilima to Take Fresh Oath As VP

Malawi 's newly elected president, Dr Lazarus Chakwera, is expected to be sworn in at Parliament in the administrative capital of Lilongwe by Chief Justice Andrew Nyirenda as the court-sanctioned presidential elections. Chakwera will take the oath of office as Head of State and government will organise a presidential inauguration ceremony to be held later. But Chakwera will preside over the Malawi Independence Day celebrations on July 6 likely to be at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

Malawi president, ministers take 10% salary cut to fight coronavirus

Malawi’s president and cabinet will take a 10% salary cut and redirect the money towards the fight against coronavirus, President Peter Mutharika said on Saturday as he announced a stimulus package in an address on state television. Mutharika announced a number of measures aimed at cushioning small- and medium-sized businesses, including tax breaks, a reduction in fuel prices and an increase in risk allowances for health workers.
