Kenya President Relaxes Restrictions on Interstate Travel Amid COVID-19 Outbreak

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta's order allowing travel in and out of Nairobi, Mombasa and Mandera counties went into effect early Tuesday morning. Kenyatta said, the relaxing of travel restrictions should not be taken lightly, and people should avoid reckless behavior. Kenyatta also announced the resumption of international flights beginning August 1, as the country gradually reopens.

US, Kenya Officially Launch Trade Talks

The United States and Kenya formally launched negotiations Wednesday on a bilateral trade deal, which the countries hope could be replicated across Africa. “Under President [Donald] Trump’s leadership, we look forward to negotiating and concluding a comprehensive, high-standard agreement with Kenya that can serve as a model for additional agreements across Africa,” said U.S. Ambassador Robert Lighthizer in a joint U.S.-Kenya statement. The first round of discussions, held over the next two weeks, will be conducted remotely because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Kenya: Govt and UK to Negotiate Post-Brexit Trade Agreement

Kenya and the United Kingdom are set to start negotiations for a Kenya-United Kingdom post Brexit trade agreement. This was agreed on Saturday, when President Uhuru Kenyatta held private talks with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. The negotiations, which are expected to be finalized ahead of the UK's exit from the European Union (Brexit) on 31st December 2020, will be conducted within the Kenya-UK Strategic Partnership Framework established by the two leaders in January 2020

President Kenyatta signs 2020/21 Budget with COVID-19 stimulus package

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday signed into law the country’s 2020/21 Budget, which includes a stimulus package to help Kenyans overcome the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Ksh 3.2 trillion 2020/21 Budget contains a Ksh 56.6 billion post COVID-19 economic stimulus package to cushion Kenyans from the effects of the pandemic. Some of the amendments in the Finance Act include the zero rating of VAT on maize, cassava and wheat flour for 6 months so as to make unga affordable.
