World Environment Day 2010 message fromSecretary-General Kamalesh Sharma
The theme of World Environment Day this year is, ‘Many Species, One Planet, One Future’. What does this mean for a girl or boy on this planet, wherever their home happens to be? It is surely the opportunity to think about the rich diversity of everything that lives together on Earth, to recognize that this rich environment is the foundation on which human life is built, and to remember that individuals acting alone can influence the lives of us all in the years ahead.

Commonwealth Day 2010 message fromSecretary-General Kamalesh Sharma
In the Commonwealth and the world over, our use of science and technology – in the causes of society and development – has been largely for the good. Recent medical advances have allowed us to understand and tackle the world’s greatest health challenges, for instance with new pharmaceuticals, genetic analysis, bio-technology, diagnostics and advanced treatments.

The Queen's Commonwealth Day message,8 March 2010
Today’s societies are constantly seeking ways to improve their quality of life, and science and technology play a vital part in that search. Experimentation, research and innovation, mean that more opportunities for improving people’s lives exist today than ever before. Take long distance communication, where the obstacles of time and geography have been dramatically reduced: people can now use mobile phones to be in instant contact virtually anywhere in the world, be it with a medical centre in the Himalayan mountains in Asia, a Pacific island school, a research facility at the South Pole, or even the international space station, beyond this planet altogether.

Future Leaders Survey 2008
A clear message is that our future leaders are not driven solely by materialistic concerns – in fact the survey paints a picture of a generation facing their adult lives with equal measures of idealism and anxiety. For these young people, the challenge is to make real the sometimes abstract issue of sustainability. Today’s university entrants truly have the hand of history on their shoulders: the first generation to face seemingly intractable global environmental problems right at the beginning of their careers, and the last with a chance to solve them.

RCS INTERNATIONAL MEETING - FINAL COMMUNIQUE 2008
The Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS) International Meeting was held in Larnaca, Cyprus from 21 to 24 September 2008. Around 80 delegates from 20 branches and 27 countries and territories attended the International Meeting, including 30 young delegates from the Nkabom Commonwealth Youth Leadership Programme. As part of “The Media; Projecting the Commonwealth” workshop, recommendations were made by the participants that YoComm should be formally recognised as a media partner of the RCS and its use by branches and youth networks promoted, with monthly reminders to branches and publicity in e-newsletters. It also stated that The Commonwealth Media Development Fund (CMDF) should be restored and expanded and there should be better collaboration on media issues between the Commonwealth Secretariat and Commonwealth organisations.

Message by Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma on World Environment Day 2009
The term ‘rising sea levels’ has real expression in the Maldives and Tuvalu. These and other low-lying states are effectively threatened with submergence. The tides have already risen, and wholesale migration is a possible response. The front lines have already been breached.
