Prince of Wales to visit Uganda

Earth Times (Kampala)
03 November 2007

LONDON, Nov. 3 Royal watchers says Prince Charles' visit to Africa is a quiet sign he is being prepared for a more prominent role after the Queen's death.

Charles will accompany his mother to Uganda later this month for the summit of Commonwealth leaders, who head the African countries that once were British colonies, Britain's Telegraph reported Saturday.

It will be Charles' first time at the summit and he also may join leaders from the 53 member states in a retreat on the shores of Lake Victoria, a senior source close to the group told the Telegraph.

Queen Elizabeth, 81, is the formal head of the Commonwealth and the aim of her son's visit is to introduce him to Commonwealth leaders as they prepare for the Queen's death and a transition, the Telegraph reported.

The question of whether Charles, 58, will become the formal head of the Commonwealth would not be decided until several months after the Queen dies and Commonwealth leaders have reached a consensus, the Telegraph reported.
